Homecoming for Johnny Duhan in Limerick (Press Release)


The Limerick Musical History Group will mark Culture Night with a free public tribute to the late Limerick songwriter Johnny Duhan on Friday, September 18, beginning at 7 pm at his childhood home on Wolfe Tone Street.

 The late Limerick songwriter Johnny Duhan, best known for writing ‘The Voyage’, will be honoured on Culture Night, Friday, September 18, with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at his childhood home on Wolfe Tone Street, Limerick, at 7 pm. The free event is open to all and will bring together musicians, artists and members of the community to celebrate his life, songs and Limerick roots.

 Duhan began his career as frontman of Granny’s Intentions before becoming one of Ireland’s most respected songwriters. His songs were recorded by Christy Moore, Mary Black, Dolores Keane, The Dubliners, and Mary Coughlan.

 Johnny died suddenly in November 2024, aged 74. The Culture Night gathering will bring his music home to the Limerick street where his remarkable journey began.

 Entertainment on the night

Organised by the Limerick Musical History Group, the event will feature Mick Hanly performing Duhan’s songs, with Kevin Sheehy, Mickey Dunne, Mickey Mac DJ, Charlie's Angels, The Blue Rabbit Guitar Club, John O’Regan, Kieran Beville (Poet), also taking part.

An art auction of portraits and works relating to the late Johnny Duhan will also take place on the night, with proceeds going towards funding the evening.

Works have been kindly donated by Clare Hartigan, Kieran Beville, Joyce Shee, Frank Hoban, Sean Lennon, Frank Boucher, John (Tulla) O’Mahoney, and his daughter Rosie O’Mahoney and Cathy O’Donavan.

It was more than the static crackle of the pirate radio ship, ‘Radio Caroline’ or the low rumble of amps being pushed to their limits in sheds and garages. This was the sound of rebellion – the fuzz box and wa-wa-pedals of guitars, treble-soaked vocals, and a youth culture refusing to settle for the showband scene.
